Firewalkers of the Great Karoo
183 million years ago, during the Early Jurassic Period, the Karoo Basin of southern Africa was home to animals that lived in a “land of fire”. It was a time of intense volcanic activity with massive lava flows that covered the land.
The animals that lived at this time included large meat-eating dinosaurs, small plant-eating dinosaurs, and mammal relatives called cynodonts.
These animals left their tracks in sediments, now preserved in a type of rock called sandstone. Since the sandstone containing these fossil footprints was deposited between lava flows, this indicates that a variety of animals survived in the area even after volcanic activity had begun.
The fossils of the Karoo Basin have a lot to tell us about how ecosystems responded to these environmental catastrophes.
